Our Origin Story

The Miscarriage Doula is an online service and resource for people who have experienced pregnancy loss at any gestation. Founded by Arden Cartrette, a woman who experienced infertility and recurrent miscarriages, she set out to change the way support is offered through the grief and trauma of loss.

Providing Support During Pregnancy Loss with the Miscarriage Doula

Arden Cartrette, who experienced infertility and recurrent miscarriages, founded the Miscarriage Doula. This online service and resource is geared towards people who have experienced pregnancy loss at any stage of gestation. The goal is to revolutionize how support is delivered during the emotional turmoil and grief of loss.

Arden and her husband underwent an infertility diagnosis between 2017-2020, which revealed anovulatory cycles and low progesterone, in addition to two miscarriages. These experiences left them feeling defeated and overwhelmed. Following the birth of their first living child, Cameron, in February 2020, Arden began to reflect on her difficult journey. The trauma of her miscarriages, and the added trauma of pregnancy after loss, made it clear that the pain of pregnancy loss does not end when the physical loss is over. It is an ongoing process of grief that requires constant attention, as new events may trigger heightened feelings of loss.

Arden's Dedication to Reproductive Health Education and Certification

Arden's passion for maternal health awareness led her to complete her certification as a Birth & Bereavement Doula through Sisters in Loss. She was proud to have chosen a course and community that emphasized the difference in maternal care for Black and brown communities. Arden continued her education through the Arizona Trauma Institute, where she is a certified Trauma Support Specialist. She values ongoing education and is dedicated to staying informed about reproductive health issues.

It’s through her work that she’s provided education for other professionals as she aims to change the way that pregnancy loss support is offered across the world. In 2023, she started a Certification Program that focuses on pregnancy loss in the first and second trimester as well as pregnancy after loss support.

Expanding The Support Team

Arden took on doulas in April 2022 to broaden accessibility to support across different time zones and types of loss. It was also a way to provide education and training opportunities for professionals.

To date, The Miscarriage Doula has served 1,000+ people and has an online community of 30,000 people who rely on us for validation and support.
